Calculate the Area or Surface of a Rectangle

Calculating the area tells you the surface of an enclosed space.

Calculating the area of a rectangle or a square

Finding the area of a rectangle- or square-shaped surface is quite simple. Just multiply the width by the length. The result is expressed in square units.

Example of using this calculator

You have a rectangular plot of land measuring 1000 meters long by 1500 meters wide. To determine its surface, just multiply these two dimensions: 1000 × 1500 = 1,500,000 m².

Feet, meters, miles, ...

You must use the same unit of measurement for both sides. The result is then in the same unit, squared. For example, entering both sides in feet gives a result in sq ft; kilometers give km².

Shape of the rectangle

The shape of a square is simple because all sides are equal. But the shape of a rectangle is a bit more complex and changes with the size of the sides. This calculator gives you a preview of the shape of your surface.

Save the area results

To record the data for side A, side B and the surface expressed in square units, press the Save button. You can also export the results in CSV or PDF format.

Example

Imagine a farmer with a perfectly rectangular farm, with one side measuring 13 km and the other 8 km. To find the area of the land, the calculation is: 13 × 8 = 104. The surface of the farm is therefore 104 km².
