Running Pace Converter — min/km to km/h
This tool converts a running pace into a speed in km/h, and back. It also calculates the estimated race time for the classic distances: 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon.
The conversion works both ways: enter your pace in minutes and seconds per kilometer to get the equivalent speed, or enter a speed in km/h to get your pace.
What is running pace?
Pace is the time needed to cover one kilometer. It is expressed in minutes and seconds per kilometer (min/km). It is the measurement used by almost all runners, whether for road running, trail running or triathlon.
For example, a pace of 5:30 min/km means it takes 5 minutes and 30 seconds to run 1 kilometer.
Conversely, speed in km/h is more common in cycling or motor sports. Both measurements express the same reality but in different units. The tool also displays your pace in min/mile, the standard in the United States.
How to convert a pace to km/h?
The conversion formula is simple:
Speed (km/h) = 60 ÷ Pace (min/km)
A few examples:
- Pace of 5:00 min/km = 60 ÷ 5 = 12 km/h
- Pace of 5:30 min/km = 60 ÷ 5.5 ≈ 10.91 km/h
- Pace of 6:00 min/km = 60 ÷ 6 = 10 km/h
- Pace of 4:00 min/km = 60 ÷ 4 = 15 km/h
For the reverse operation, divide 3,600 (seconds in an hour) by the speed in km/h to get the pace in seconds per km, then convert it to minutes and seconds.
Calculate your race time
The "Race time" section of this tool estimates the time needed to cover a given distance at a constant pace.
Time = Pace (sec/km) × Distance (km)
For example, at a pace of 5:30 min/km:
- 5K: 27min 30s
- 10K: 55min 00s
- Half marathon (21.0975 km): 1h 56min 23s
- Marathon (42.195 km): 3h 52min 45s
Enter any distance in kilometers to get your estimated time. The classic distances (5K, 10K, half marathon, marathon) are suggested directly in the field.
Reference pace table
Here is a correspondence table between common paces, equivalent speeds and estimated marathon times:
| Pace (min/km) | Speed (km/h) | 10K | Half marathon | Marathon |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4:00 | 15.0 | 40min 00s | 1h24min 23s | 2h48min 47s |
| 4:30 | 13.3 | 45min 00s | 1h34min 56s | 3h09min 53s |
| 5:00 | 12.0 | 50min 00s | 1h45min 29s | 3h30min 58s |
| 5:30 | 10.9 | 55min 00s | 1h56min 02s | 3h52min 04s |
| 6:00 | 10.0 | 1h00min 00s | 2h06min 35s | 4h13min 10s |
| 6:30 | 9.2 | 1h05min 00s | 2h17min 08s | 4h34min 16s |
| 7:00 | 8.6 | 1h10min 00s | 2h27min 41s | 4h55min 22s |
Pace in min/mile
This tool also displays the pace in minutes per mile (min/mile). This unit is used in the United States and the United Kingdom, and on some sports watches configured with imperial units.
The conversion is: 1 mile = 1.60934 km. A pace of 5:00 min/km therefore corresponds to a pace of 8:03 min/mile.
Practical uses for runners
This tool is useful in several situations:
- Preparing for a race: calculating the target pace to finish a marathon in 3h30, for example (pace of 4:58 min/km).
- Analyzing your training: converting the speed shown on a treadmill (in km/h) to a pace to compare with your outdoor runs.
- Planning your heart rate zones: training plans often describe target paces in min/km or min/mile.
- Cycling: converting a bike speed expressed in km/h to estimate the time on a course.
Frequently asked questions about pace
What is a good pace for a beginner?
For a beginner runner, a pace between 6:00 and 8:00 min/km (roughly 9:40 to 12:50 min/mile) is perfectly normal. What matters is running at a comfortable pace where you can hold a conversation. That corresponds to a speed of about 7.5 to 10 km/h.
What pace to finish a marathon in 4 hours?
To finish a marathon in exactly 4 hours, you need to hold a pace of 5:41 min/km (about 9:09 min/mile), i.e. roughly 10.55 km/h. A safety margin is advisable: aim for 5:35 min/km to compensate for slowing down at the end of the race.
What is the difference between pace and speed?
Pace expresses the time taken to cover 1 kilometer (min/km), while speed expresses the distance covered in one hour (km/h). The two measures are inversely proportional: the shorter the pace (small number), the higher the speed.
Can I use this tool for cycling?
Yes. Although the term "pace" is mainly used in running, the min/km ↔ km/h conversion works for any activity: cycling, power walking, rollerblading, etc. Just enter your usual speed to get the corresponding pace.
How do I calculate my race time from my pace?
Multiply your pace in seconds per kilometer by the distance in kilometers. For example, a pace of 5:30 min/km (330 s/km) over 10 km gives 330 × 10 = 3,300 seconds = exactly 55 minutes. The "Race time" section of this tool does this calculation automatically.
