What is the GCF (greatest common factor)?

The GCF of several numbers is the largest integer that divides each of them exactly, with no remainder. For example, the GCF of 12 and 18 is 6, because 6 is the largest number that divides both 12 (12 ÷ 6 = 2) and 18 (18 ÷ 6 = 3).

The factored form then expresses these numbers as the product of the GCF and their respective quotients: 12 and 18 = 6 × (2, 3). This notation is useful in algebra, in arithmetic and for simplifying fractions.

This tool also supports decimal numbers: it automatically converts the values to integers by scaling them, calculates the GCF, then returns the result in the original scale.

Why calculate the greatest common factor?

Finding the greatest common factor is useful in many situations:

  • Simplifying a fraction: dividing the numerator and denominator by their GCF gives the fully reduced fraction.
  • Solving sharing problems: splitting objects into the largest possible equal groups.
  • Factoring an algebraic expression: pulling out the common factor in a sum or a polynomial.
  • Simplifying calculations: reducing ratios or proportions to their simplest form.
