Cube Root Online – Calculate ∛ of a Number

What is a cube root?

The cube root of a number 'x' is the number 'y' which, multiplied by itself three times, gives the number 'x'. For example ∛8 = 2 because 2 × 2 × 2 = 2³ = 8. More generally, if ∛x = y then y³ = x.

Negative numbers

Unlike the square root, the cube root of a negative number is a negative real number. For example:

  • ∛(-8) = -2 (because (-2)³ = -8)
  • ∛(-27) = -3 (because (-3)³ = -27)
  • ∛(-64) = -4 (because (-4)³ = -64)

The cube root therefore works with both positive and negative numbers, unlike the square root which requires complex numbers for negative values.
